Should I Date My Sperm Donor?

I never imagined I would have to ask myself this question.
Should I date the man who was supposed to be nothing more than my sperm donor?
A few months earlier, my life had fallen apart.
I had separated from my partner after discovering I was pregnant. Instead of supporting me, he suggested that I terminate the pregnancy.
I refused.
I wanted my baby.
But at four months pregnant, I lost the pregnancy.
The miscarriage shattered me.
After everything I had been through, I knew I still wanted to become a mother. I was financially stable, emotionally independent, and prepared to raise a child on my own.
So I made a decision.
I would stop looking for a relationship and focus on motherhood.
I decided to use a sperm donor.
That was when I met him.
At first, everything was supposed to be completely professional.
We exchanged messages for a while, talking every day. Then we agreed to meet for a drink.
But something happened that neither of us expected.
We clicked.
We had so much in common. We laughed easily. The conversation never felt forced.
And, if I was being honest with myself, I found him incredibly attractive.
Still, we both agreed to keep things professional.
He would donate.
I would become a mother.
That was supposed to be the end of it.
Except it wasn’t.
Every time I saw his name appear on my phone, I felt excited.
And I realized that excitement had nothing to do with getting pregnant.
I was excited to see him.
Then came the day of the donation.
We met, and almost immediately, it felt different.
We talked for hours.
We ordered takeaway.
We laughed.
We talked about our lives, our hopes, our fears, and our futures.
Eventually, he stayed the night.
And somehow, being with him felt completely natural.
It was as if we’d known each other for years.
The next morning, he said something that completely changed everything.
He wanted to date me.
Not casually.
He wanted to see where our relationship could go.
And then he said something even bigger.
He wanted to be a proper father to the baby.
I was stunned.
This man had entered my life as a sperm donor.
Now he was talking about becoming my partner and the father of my child.
Part of me was excited.
Another part of me was terrified.
I kept telling myself:
If it doesn’t work out, what’s the worst that could happen?
The original plan was for him to donate and then disappear from my life anyway.
And if he wanted shared custody someday, I thought I could accept that.
After all, it would be his child too.
He was single. He had his own home. He had a successful career. He had only donated to a couple of women years earlier.
I didn’t think I was being naïve.
But then I started asking myself a much harder question.
Was I making this decision because I truly wanted him… or because I was still trying to replace everything I had lost?
I had recently lost my relationship.
Then I lost my pregnancy.
And now, almost immediately, I had found a man who wanted to give me both a baby and a relationship.
Maybe it was too much, too soon.
Because the truth was…
I barely knew him.
And yet I was considering having his child.
That was when I started wondering whether dating him could turn the situation into something far more complicated.
What if we fell in love and then broke up?
What if we had a baby and our relationship fell apart?
What if he wanted full custody?
What if we disagreed about how to raise our child?
What if he demanded child support?
What if he became controlling?
What if he wasn’t the man I thought he was?
And what if, after having a child together, I discovered that walking away from him was no longer an option?
Suddenly, my original thought — “The worst thing is that I never see him again” — sounded incredibly naïve.
Because if we had a child together, I wouldn’t simply be losing a boyfriend.
I could be dealing with him for the rest of my life.
And that is exactly what frightened me.
A relationship between two people can end.
But parenthood doesn’t.
So I had to ask myself the question I had been avoiding:
Was I ready to become a mother… or was I simply desperate to heal the hole left by everything I’d lost?
Maybe I needed to stop.
Maybe I needed to grieve.
Maybe I needed therapy.
Maybe I needed time.
Because becoming a parent is a decision that affects more than just me.
It affects the child who hasn’t even been born yet.
And that child deserves parents who have made their decisions with clear minds, not broken hearts.
So now I’m standing at a crossroads.
The man who was supposed to be my sperm donor wants to become my partner.
He wants to become a father.
And a part of me wants to believe this could be the beginning of something beautiful.
But another part of me keeps asking…
What if this isn’t love?
What if it’s simply two vulnerable people trying to fill the empty spaces in each other’s lives?
And if I get that answer wrong…
I won’t be the only person who has to live with the consequences.
So tell me…
Would you date your sperm donor if you felt an instant connection?
Or is this a situation where emotions should take a back seat and the baby’s future should come first?
THE END. ❤️
